Do Indoor Playground Business Better Than Seth Godin

In a previous blog post, I discussed the 7 things I no longer do in my indoor playground business as I have grown and matured as a business proprietor.
I referenced Michael Hyatt, who, in many of his novels and programs continuously describes designing your ideal weeks and days as"the appetite zone." Operating inside your dream zone, as he explains it, only means you are spending the majority of your time doing what you both love AND are good at.
Even though this is continually shifting as my priorities (both professionally and personally) evolve, these are 5 of those jobs that I am not giving up only yet for a business proprietor.

At Climbing Vines Cafe and Play, we've chosen our exceptional personal birthday parties as the main focus of our small business .
Due to this focus, I have chosen to personally plan the primary facets of each celebration we sponsor. When someone publications their occasion with us, they get a detailed confirmation which includes my contact info and mentions that I will be personally in touch as their event draws near.
While I don't typically take care of the implementation of our celebrations, I do still act as the main touchpoint for parents and gather all their information and tastes. Ten days before each party, I send a personalized celebration"questionnaire" which includes all the details we've gathered up to that point, provides additional day-of information, and inquires about last-minute details.
I answer all queries the host may have in response to that email and-- following some back-and-forth communication-- I list all their event information on what we call a"party prep sheet" Based on clients' choices, I make a list for every one our vendors (catering, party supplies, balloons, paper products, etc.) and will usually have a team member complete the purchasing and organize all of the supplies so they are grouped by party. Because we have around 6 all-inclusive events in 1 weekend, this organization is essential!
The party-prep sheet is an extremely detailed document that allows our party hosts to do the occasion to the specific specifications of the parents, leaving no rock unturned. This has allowed me to have most weekends free yet still feel convinced we're delivering an above-and-beyond birthday celebration experience.
After the celebration, we send a questionnaire to every hosting family. If they have opinions, whether it be positive or negative, I always follow up personally. This closes the loop clients' expertise and makes sure they understand I truly care about their child's special day. This process has lead to a significant amount of repeat bookings and consistent referrals from previous parties.
Not only is planning these parties some thing I excel in, but additionally, I take great pleasure inside . Event planning is the way I got into this business in the first place, so I'm more than pleased to have this endeavor. If I am ever feeling overwhelmed with the facts, I understand I have amazing team members I can lean on.


Speaking of our amazing team members, yet another job I choose to have a hand in is our hiring and firing process. While I really do leave the final conclusion to our cafe manager, I would rather write the project posts and descriptions and filter through resumes and applications before bringing anybody in for a meeting.
Having spent several years shooting and hiring my fair share of employees, it's easy for me to spot red-flags on applications and find"diamonds in the rough." Since we have the majority of our normal operating procedures optimized and documented, I would rather hire based on character and excitement rather than experience.
In addition, I make sure I personally welcome every worker to our team and touch base with them frequently to check in and collect feedback from them.


Another job that lies within my current"desire zone" is digging the general direction of our organization and coming up with fresh ways to best serve our community.
Since I spend some time doing those 7 things (and more!) , my time and energy have been freed up to investigate what our ideal clients want and want and figure out a way to incorporate that in our business model.
As an instance, I noticed that our birthday celebration bookings were slowing down in the Summer. When I asked a few clients, they said that they DID adore our events and attention-to-detail but chosen a Summer party to be out at their residence (since many have backyards and pools). We then began offering mobile events, where we would bring food, decorations, and activities for your kids to their houses, and it was a hit!
Another illustration is our occasions . We're constantly adding fun new occasions that allow customers, particularly working parents with limited weekday availability, to see us out of hours and get an enhanced experience throughout the theme of the event, class, or activity.
If I had been I still doing EVERY task in my enterprise, I would not have nearly enough time to do as much research or innovation.


When it comes to understanding how to innovate and the best way to provide, it starts with a genuine connection with customers.
It's because of this that I really like interacting with our customers all time (when I can) and on social networking. I opt to work parties, events, as well as open-play when my family's schedule allows it so I could stay involved and aware of what is happening during the day-to-day. It also gives me the opportunity to observe how customers are using our distance first-hand and listen to any concerns or queries they have. Although in this age of technology there are testimonials, types, and surveys, I have discovered that NOTHING can replace using a face-to-face dialog with clients using your space (and probably visits competitors too!) on a daily basis.
It's for this reason that you will even see billionaire CEOs seeing retail places on a regular basis. Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, was renowned for seeing hundreds of stores across the country every year, spending some time with the customers who had been spending their money on his products.
I really like being a family owned and operated business, and I love for my customers to know that I'm completely invested in their happiness.

While I no longer do one-on-one consulting for individuals hoping to start out indoor playgrounds, I do spend a substantial quantity of time creating absolutely free articles for them on my blog and over on YouTube. When I was researching this business model, there wasn't a great deal of information out there. Recent owners actually keep all their business secrets close to their vest, and now I don't blame them! It is hard as soon as you've worked for years and years to set up a profitable business to wish to provide away those secrets for nothing. Even in the event that you charge a consulting fee, you're still sort of giving away the secrets that you have worked so difficult for and it is quite easy as a company owner to get a little smug and protective of your own research and development.
As it came time to start my own business, I wound up making a slew of mistakes (and I suggest a TON of mistakes) because I simply didn't know any better. So when I started getting calls and emails to consult for other possible play cafe owners, then I could not keep all this information to myself. As soon as it's easy for me to feel like an imposter or there are other small business owners much more capable than me to discuss this information, I know that there's a 4-years-ago me sitting at work somewhere waiting for another idea to leap out at them.
And frankly, I do not need to see one more business close because somebody who's walked before them did not share any information! So why don't you discuss it myself?!
But my time is precious. I've got two small children and also run another company... I don't have 12 hours to spend hand-holding each perspective owner through the procedure. (And allow me to tell you, it is going to require at least 12 to 24 hours of paid one-on-one consulting to break the surface of what you need, including documentation)
Students may go through these modules in their own speed, and I do not need to spend some opportunity to walk my students through the program.
This allows me to assist other entrepreneurs in their path while also reserving time and energy I want for my loved ones and other commitments.
In general, this business model may truly be anything the owner wants it to be. I understand many owners that choose to do all the things inside their business, and it works for them since we all have different"desire zones."
Are and may design my"perfect" weeks so. When I was burning the candle on both ends trying to tackle everything , I would do myself, my family, and my customers a major disservice.
